Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide
We encourage children to follow the familiar Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide approach:
Slip on protective clothing where possible.
Slop on sunscreen.
Slap on a broad-brimmed hat.
Seek shade, particularly during the strongest parts of the day.
Slide on sunglasses where appropriate.
These simple habits help children enjoy outdoor play while reducing their exposure to harmful UV radiation.
Making Sun Safety Part of Our Day
Sun protection isn’t something we only think about on particularly hot days. UV levels can be high even when the temperature feels comfortable or the sky is cloudy.
Our educators incorporate sun-safe practices into the children’s daily routines, including encouraging children to play in shaded areas, wearing hats when outdoors and applying sunscreen in accordance with our centre’s policies and procedures.
We also use our outdoor environments thoughtfully, making the most of available shade and planning activities around conditions throughout the day.
Building Healthy Habits Early
Sun safety is more than protecting children today — it’s also about helping them develop habits that can continue throughout their lives.
By involving children in simple routines such as putting on their hats, seeking shade and talking about why we protect our skin, we help them understand the importance of looking after themselves.
We encourage families to support these habits at home too. When children see the important adults around them practising sun-safe behaviours, it helps reinforce the message that protecting ourselves from the sun is a normal and important part of everyday life.
Enjoying the Outdoors Safely
We believe children should have plenty of opportunities to explore, play and learn outdoors. With thoughtful sun protection and good routines, we can continue to enjoy our outdoor environments while supporting children’s health, safety and wellbeing.
So, as we head outside to play, explore and discover, remember:
Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide — and enjoy the sunshine safely! ☀️💛
