The first five years of a child’s life are crucial as they develop at such a fast rate, however, at times children may be delayed in some developmental areas such as, language and speech development. It is vital that children obtain the skills to communicate with others around them, if children are struggling with their language and speech development it is important that they receive early intervention to assist them in meeting their expected milestones.
When to seek professional help.
1-2 years
It is recommended to seek advice from a speech pathologist if your child
Is not using words or actions to communicate
Is not responding to others
2-3 years
It is recommended to seek advice from a speech pathologist if your child
Is not understanding simple instructions
Is not using many words
is not joining words in meaningful phrases
3-5 years
Is not understood by others
Has speech fluency problems or stammering
Is not playing with other children y is not able to have a conversation
How to take the first step in assisting your child.
If you have any concerns such as the ones listed above regarding your child’s speech and language development, we suggest seeing your GP and requesting a referral for a speech assessment. Your GP may also refer you to have your child’s hearing testing, as hearing issues can often contribute to language delays.
